Reviews

Composer Brian Slawson has designed and composed a marimba trio for one 4.3-octave marimba, which recreates the character of the beautiful folk music of the Mexican marimba with the added challenge of multi-meter shifts from 5/8 to 3/8 and 3/4.  The overall design of this two-minute ensemble is three-part structure (ABA) with the two fast sections sandwiching a lyrical middle section only 12 measures in length. Two-mallet technique is utilized throughout this ever-so-brief composition tonally set in F major. The three parts are in harmony, not unison, throughout this work.

This keyboard ensemble would be quite appropriate for the pre-college set of keyboard percussionists who have developed solid intermediate-level technique and rhythmic independence with shifting meters. Although memorization is not indicated to be a performance necessity, it would certainly enhance the performance of this unique trio on one marimba.
