Snow Globe by Benjamin Holmes is a solo for vibraphone drawing its inspiration from wind-up snow globes and music boxes. The musical material of this piece consists of different styles and characters, ranging from improvisatory jazz-like figures to a delicate and catchy waltz-style melody.
The performer must combine advanced left hand technique and dexterity with rhythmic independence to draw out the subtle melody over dense, moving harmonic accompaniment. Snow Globe features a wide array of technical demands for the performer while offering a memorable theme and musical fulfillment for listeners.
Snow Globe ships in a printed, professionally bound folio with a full color cover.
• Solo vibraphone (standard 3-octaves)
“Snow Globe” presents music that is poignant and full of hope. This five-minute piece for vibraphone is accessible and quite beautiful both to listen to and play. This original work by Benjamin Holmes has not only captured the beautiful melodic quality of various wind-up trinkets, such as the snow globe and music box, it has captured the spirit of the “Snow Globe”—lilting, stable, and hopeful.
“Snow Globe” features a technically intricate waltz melody. The player will need to be mindful of both pedal and mallet dampening to ensure the harmonic progression and voice leading are clear. Additionally, “Snow Globe” features rapid flourishes throughout the range of the vibraphone; these are mainly used at cadence points to maintain forward motion. While these flourishes are flashy, they lay well on the instrument and should be accessible for the intermediate to advanced player. The melody, once introduced, is continually present; however, the accompaniment changes throughout, allowing for an evolving musical texture that remains engaging.
Wherever this piece is performed it will surely be uplifting to all who hear it. It is great to see accessible pieces written for the vibraphone, and kudos to Holmes on a great addition to the repertoire!
