Kirk Gay brings the soundtrack of Undertale, a hugely popular role-playing video game by Toby Fox, to the world of percussion ensemble with the medley Orchestrations of the Underground. Three themes from the Undertale soundtrack appear including, “His Theme,” “Spear of Justice,” and “Meglovania.” He cleverly weaves these three themes together in one tight-knit, energetic package.
Kirk has dedicated this arrangement to his daughter Kenna who first introduced him to this music.

Kirk Gay has crafted a driving, fun compilation of pieces from the role-playing video game Undertale, originally developed and scored by Toby Fox. Gay’s lively arrangements evoke the game’s adventurous tale: a chronicle of a human child who falls into the Underworld and must face monsters and other subterranean creatures.
Gay ties together three pieces in a cohesive arrangement totaling about five minutes in length. The piece begins with “His Theme,” a simple, moderate, optimistic melody that grows by the addition of instruments until the darker middle section, “Spear of Justice.” Here, the listener starts on a rising-and-falling journey that builds tension and eventually spirals into the final section, “Megalovania,” where the determined groove per- haps illustrates the child finishing some Underground quest. Gay ends by uniting motifs from all three sections, recapping the character’s journey and ending with a victorious rhythmic burst.
“Orchestrations” will be best suited for an advanced high school or early collegiate group. Each section is in a different key and time signature. All three contain some tricky syncopated patterns, with the most difficulty concentrated in the middle 6/8 section. These parts will require significant personal work to achieve solid ensemble cohesion. Though the large instrumentation may make it prohibitive for some ensembles, Gay has provided two 4.3-octave marimba parts to ease this burden slightly.
