Description

Written for six players, this easier/intermediate ensemble for drums and percussion by Alan Keown allows each player to contribute to the overall ensemble. It uses only standard, common instrumentation and no mallet instruments are required.

Opening with a distant and repetitive snare motive, players layer in one-by-one, building to a driving and groovy piece which never relents. Players are featured through solo and duet phrases, and dramatic dynamics are used to give the piece a relentless sense of motion throughout.

This piece comes as a professionally printed and bound score and includes individual parts in PDF format for printing or for tablet viewing.

Instrumentation

  • 4 timpani
  • Drums (piccolo snare drum, snare drum, 2 high toms, 2 low toms)
  • Accessories (finger cymbals, 2 cowbells, tambourine, temple blocks, suspended cymbal)

Reviews

This short sextet provides an appropriate outlet to feature young percussionists, with minimal instrumentation; however, it may lack the luster to gain the popularity of the targeted performer.

Most of the instruments may be found in any high school percussion closet. The rhythms are simple and repetitive, which makes this easily accessible and a quick learn. Middle school percussionists would have no problems here; however, Player 5 must be comfortable working within a small multi setup.

At three-and-a-half minutes, I feel it is terribly overpriced. Upon purchase, you receive the score and a CD-ROM, which includes the individual parts and practice mp3. For the money, the shopper might not expect to have to print his or her own parts.
