The Lord’s Prayer is one of the most iconic sacred verses in the English language. It was famously set to music by Albert Hay Malotte in 1935 and has been performed by some of the most renowned artists of all time.
Now, thanks to Tapspace artist Julia Gaines, this amazing music is available to marimbists in a unique and touching arrangement. Julia was inspired to arrange this work while traveling in Russia in 1989. She asked the vaudeville xylophonist Val Eddy, who had been performing an arrangement on xylophone, if she could play around with it for her own marimba arrangement. Julia was also urged by her father, a pastor, to add the theme from Amazing Grace to the middle section, thus giving the piece a unique ebb and flow.
The Lord’s Prayer ships in a printed, professionally bound folio with a full color cover.
• Marimba—low A (w/ optional low C indications)
The more famous settings of the work are normally performed by vocalists, with the texts taken from ‘’The Lord’s Prayer,’’ which is a major text in the Christian faith. This setting is a creative presentation of this well-known piece. The publication offers a fresh approach to the solo by inserting another common church hymn, ‘’Amazing Grace,’’ which occurs after the initial phrase of the work.
The arrangement presents several fresh ideas that add color to the work. These include rolling on all notes, and rolling on the nodes to describe whispering. Two measures are notated as optional. If they are performed, then a five-octave marimba will be needed.
The scoring is warm and rich with color and balance. This piece should be performed often, as it will be appropriate for recital programs and church settings.
