Reviews

“Year One” is a short and fun percussion quintet with an easy setup, clearly notated score, and the type of drumming that a young percussionist hopes for. The piece is just two minutes long and consists of a fast-tempo groove, short solo bursts, plenty of syncopated accents, and sixteenth-note hocketing.

The piece calls for eighth- and sixteenth-note rhythms in common time broken up with occasional interruptions of 5/8. The motion is continuous with tutti rhythms alternating with traded rhythms. There are enough dynamics to keep it interesting but still accessible for younger players. The pace is fast and exciting with a straightforward drumming technique. With the exception of occasional rim playing, the writing requires the same playing technique that young players will encounter in their band music. The primal drive and ability to let loose with fortissimo dynamics and accents will appeal to young percussionists.

This piece would be an excellent addition to an intermediate percussion ensemble concert, especially for a program with limited instrument availability. The audience will enjoy the bombastic nature without their ears being overtaxed.
