Plane of Existence by Carson Chlup is a work for nine percussionists that represents, in the words of the composer, “the space between life and death.” The piece requires a high level of ensemble communication, listening, and balance as it proceeds through varying sonic landscapes — from ethereal bowed passages to driving rhythmic torrents — reflecting the various stages of “transition.”

3 Marimbas — (1) low A, (1) low F, (1) 5-octave w/ optional low A indications
Drums — bass drum, 3 graduated toms, 2 snare drums
Cymbals & gongs — ride cymbal, sizzle cymbal, suspended cymbal, 2 Zil-Bels (or equivalent), tam-tam
Accessories — 2 brake drums (low/high), ocean drum, 2 mark trees, shaker, 2-8 bows
