Description

Wood & Water by Anthony Di Sanza is a refreshing piece written for frame drum that can be performed as a duet with two frame drums or as a solo with audio track accompaniment. The piece offers performers the chance to explore the many possibilities of this ancient instrument that is underrepresented in the traditional percussion world. The continual dialogue between the two players (or between the player and audio track in the solo version) is at the foundation for the creative exploration of the instrument. A variety of techniques are explored that create intrigue between the parts. The piece explores three thematic elements that are interconnected mathematically but each have their own distinct flavors. Each theme has a shared tempo, but the pace and placement of the beat is altered based on time signature and metric modulations. Wood & Water is an intricate work that is a wonderful opportunity to explore an age-old instrument with roots from all over the world.

2 Frame drums (any type)

or solo frame drum and audio playback

Reviews

This frame drum duet can also be performed as a solo with audio playback. According to the Tapspace website, “The piece offers performers the chance to explore the many possibilities of this ancient instrument that is underrepresented in the traditional percussion world. The continual dialogue between the two players (or between the player and audio track in the solo version) is at the foundation for the creative exploration of the instrument.”

This piece is much needed in the traditional repertoire, and Anthony Di Sanza has done a wonderful job incorporating many common techniques found in frame drumming. The piece explores three (or four) distinct sections that are metrically linked, but remain unique. The transition from section to section is seamless.

“Wood & Water” is meticulously notated and has some of the best performance notes I’ve ever seen. While the difficulty of this piece is “advanced,” the way it is presented allows for anyone to have success. You even receive two separate scores — one for the duet, and one for the solo with audio track.

I highly recommend “Wood & Water’’ for anyone. Whether you are just starting out your frame drumming journey or continuing a seasoned career, it is an excellent piece and needed addition to the repertoire.
